E/M Consultant
The E/M Consultant helps ensure providers are properly up-coding their exams. This tool can be accessed in the exam screen.
To access E/M Consultant:
- From the exam screen, go to Billing > E/M Consultant, click E/M Consultant on the left sidebar, or voice the command “EM consultant.”
E/M Consultant window overview:
- Displayed on the left are the office code categories of all levels.
- Codes displayed in black have documentation in the note to support them.
- Codes displayed in red lack at least one E/M element in one of the categories.
- Displayed on the right are the E/M categories, systems, and elements.
- Categories that meet the requirements for the selected code are displayed in black.
- Categories that do not meet requirements for the selected code are displayed in red.
Control buttons:
- Assign Code: Assigns the selected office code to the exam.
- Cancel: Closes the E/M Consultant.
- Bullet: Toggles between bullet counting and time billing.
- Medical Decision radio buttons: Override the medical decision-making portion of the E/M consultant.
E/M Consultant features:
- The E/M Consultant screen can be moved, minimized, and resized.
- Counts populate E/M fields in the exam.
- Does not count blank fields.
- Does not count fields with a Goto bracket.
- Shows in real time what is lacking for the selected exam level.
- Users can select a higher exam level to see what they will be missing if they decide to up-code.
- When face time with patient is selected (Bullet/Time button), the exam levels that can be billed will display in black, as shown below.
Timer
- To time a patient encounter, click on the Timer icon in the exam screen.
- Timer results will not be inserted into the note; the timer is simply a guide to help providers use the E/M Consultant time feature.
E/M SmartMarks
- Text can be associated with an E/M element (either E/M text or standard text).
- SmartMarks can be assigned to a specific category and system.
- After being navigated, SmartMarks will remain and can be pulled forward into copied exams.
